Electric WhEels skaters in training

Getting Started

So you've registered for one of our training programs… Now what? See the list (and links) below to prepare for your adventure in Roller Derby!

What Gear is Required?

Before we get into the list… we want you to know there is loaner gear available. If you're not quite ready to commit to purchasing your own gear – or if cost is an issue, please let us know and we will do everything we can to help out. We may have exactly what you need in our inventory!

Skates

Only 4-wheel, quad skates are permitted in Roller Derby (sorry, no rollerblades/in-line skates!). If you're buying new, you may want to consider derby-style (low profile) skates, as they are designed to allow the ankle mobility and agility needed for this sport.

Protective Padding

Knee pads, elbow pads, and the ever-important wrist guards are required. If you have questions about finding the right size/fit, we'd be happy to guide you.

Helmet

Multi-impact helmets are required. Our coaches can (and will) adjust helmet straps to ensure a proper fit. If you have questions about the best style or fit, just let us know.

Mouthguard

This is the only item you will not find in our inventory (ew!). If you need help sourcing a mouthguard, let us know. Typically they can be purchased online or at any sporting goods store.

Derby Insurance

All skaters are required to have an active WFTDI membership. This costs $50 (CAD) per year and provides skaters with:

Accident Insurance

Supplemental coverage to help with expenses related to derby injuries that exceed your provincial insurance.

Liability Insurance

Protection against claims resulting from injuries and damage to people and/or property, for covered events.

Join via the WFTDI website at: https://www.wftdicanada.ca/join

Once you've set up your account, remember to also join our roster!

Session Fees

Each session is between 12 and 13 weeks long, and you can sign up for an entire session, or opt to drop-in! Please note you'll still need valid WFTDI Insurance to play.

Session Fee

$150

Drop-In Fee

$15/week

Please reach out to [email protected] if cost is a barrier to make alternate arrangements.

Session fees can be submitted via e-transfer to [email protected]
